I want you to do me a favor. I want you to sit back and close your eyes. I now want you to think back to your childhood and think of your hero. No, I am not talking about Batman or Superman; I am talking about a real person. Think about that person. Why was that person your hero? Why did you look up to that person? Did you like to be around them? Did they help you out? Did they take time to spend with you? Did they treat you as if you were somebody? All the characteristics of your hero actually describe that of a good leader. A good leader is someone who is self-motivated, an encourager, has passion, is confident, responsible, knowledgeable and has integrity. We all know this list could go on and on, but let us move on.
I have always heard that in order to lead, you first must follow. This statement is very true simply for this reason. You understand and can relate to those you serve. Serve? Yes, that is what I said. Leadership is actually the highest form of service! How many politicians do you know still look at their position that way-as an act of service? When being in the political arena, that is the mentality you must have-service. How can I make a difference? How can I improve my community? How can I enrich the office I seek? How can I help the people of my community?
We use the word “service” daily, but what does the word "service" really mean? According to Wiktionary, service means an event in which an entity takes the responsibility that something desirable happens on the behalf of another entity. Therefore, to put it in layman’s terms, service means someone steps out and says, ‘Hey, I want to make it my obligation that something desirable happens to our community.’ Now, that sounds like a good election candidate to me!!!
I do not consider myself a politician because that word had developed a bad reputation over the years. I am not a politician because that is my profession, I am merely a motivated citizen that wants to serve those of our community and, like the definition states, take responsibility for something desirable happening in our community. Early voting begins October 15th and General election is November 6. So, when you go to vote, let me ask you one thing: How can I serve you as the people of Towns County?
